Waisenstrasse is one of the oldest streets in Berlin, and was first named in 1861, after the Friedrichs hospital and orphanage once located between the banks of the River Spree and Stralauer Strasse. The orphanage was founded by Elector Frederick III (Frederick I) in 1697 and completed in 1716. Waisenstrasse is also home to the historic restaurant "zur letzten Instanz", one of the oldest known eateries in Berlin. It is part of a group of several narrow buildings, dating at their core from the 16th century. During the construction of the fortifications in around 1680, the original city walls, dating from 1200, were used to form the back walls of these small residential houses.
