Vienna: best quality-life city in the world

Our member Marschall Real Estate is pleased to announce that Vienna has been chosen once again as the city which offers the best quality of life worldwide by two important surveys which have taken into account several criteria.

Recently and for the second year in a row, the ranking Global Liveability from the Economist Intelligence Unit has chosen Vienna as international winner. In the study, 140 international cities have been compared in terms of security, health, environment, infrastructures, as well as culture and education.

Vienna grabs attention thanks to its majestic architecture, large number of international schools and properties with moderate renting prices. Furthermore, the Austrian capital boasts a wide music, artistic and large tradition of Viennese cafés offer. Vienna has the best drinking water and an excellent public transport network with moderate prices, as well as being considered highly-safe and one of the “smart city“ leaders.

Despite the popularity of cities such as London, Paris and New York, they are some positions behind Vienna due to their increasing crime rate and worse infrastructures. Sydney climbs two places, partly thanks to the improvement of the environmental qualifications.

However, the best improvement has been experienced by San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital, which has climbed 20 places up to the 69 position. Life conditions in Moscow, Belgrade, Hanoi and Kiev have also improved considerably over the past five years.

According to the ranking of the Economist Intelligence Unit 2019, the 10 cities with the best quality of life worldwide are:

  1. Vienna / Austria
  2. Melbourne / Australia
  3. Sydney / Australia
  4. Osaka / Japan
  5. Calgary / Canada
  6. Vancouver / Canada
  7. Tokyo / Japan
  8. Toronto / Canada
  9. Copenhagen / Denmark
  10. Adelaide / Australia

According to Mercer’s survey, European cities still dominate the top ten. Vienna has constantly leaded the said international list since 2009, followed by Zurich, Vancouver, Munich and Auckland.

Regarding the special security ranking, Luxembourg is the number one followed by Helsinki, Basel, Bern and Zurich.

Mercer has analysed in its quality of life survey, 450 cities all around the world taking into account 39 criteria. The data has been compiled by and independent high schools authorities.
